How early can I get my MOT done?
There's no minimum notice period. You can book your MOT at ONEFIX any time you like, right up to the day your current certificate runs out — the only real question is whether booking early or booking late works better for you.
What happens if I leave it until the last possible day?
If you leave it to the final day, you've got no room left if anything goes wrong. A car can fail for a dangerous defect, and a vehicle with a dangerous defect must not be driven at all until it's repaired. Driving without a valid MOT certificate can also mean a substantial fine. Neither of those is a good position to be in with no time left on the clock. If your MOT has already run out, our guide on what happens when your MOT runs out covers what you can and can't do next, and what a dangerous defect actually means explains that specific outcome in full.
Why is booking a week or two early worth it?
Because it buys you time. If the test turns up an advisory — a note that something will need attention before long, rather than an outright failure — you're not stuck making a same-day decision. And if the car does fail, ONEFIX gives a free retest within ten working days of that failure, so booking early means that ten-day window sits comfortably inside your current certificate's validity instead of running past it. Our MOT retest rules page sets out exactly what's free and what isn't if a retest is needed, and what an MOT advisory means explains the difference between an advisory and a fail.
How do I find out exactly when my current MOT runs out?
You can check any vehicle's MOT history, including the expiry date and every advisory or failure from past tests, free on the government's own service. It takes the guesswork out of "when did I last book this" and is worth doing before you ring round for a slot, so you know exactly how much runway you've got left.
Does ONEFIX test my type of vehicle, and when?
ONEFIX carries out Class 4 MOT testing — that's cars and light vans — at Plas Acton Garage, 282 Chester Road, Wrexham, LL12 8DU. We're open Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 5:00, and closed at weekends, so if you're planning to book early, weekday slots are where the flexibility is. Current MOT pricing is here: £54.95.
What if this is a newer car — when's its first MOT actually due?
A car needs its first MOT three years after it was first registered, and every year after that for as long as you keep it on the road. If you're not sure which category your car falls into yet, checking the free history service above will usually confirm it, since a car that's never needed a test won't have one on record.
What happens if the MOT turns anything up?
If anything needs doing, ONEFIX quotes it in writing before any work starts, and we don't carry out work that hasn't been approved first. That's true whether it's a same-day advisory or something picked up during a wider service — you see the price and the reasoning before you say yes to anything.
So when should you actually book?
As a rule of thumb: don't wait for the last day on the certificate. A week or two of headroom costs you nothing and means an advisory, a failure, or just a difficult-to-get appointment doesn't turn into a scramble. Ready to get a date in the diary? Book your MOT with ONEFIX.
