What does "wheel alignment" actually mean?
It means the angles of the wheels — the way they point relative to each other and to the road — are set back to what the manufacturer specifies. When they're off, even slightly, the car doesn't track straight down the road the way it should.
What are the signs my car needs it?
The main ones are a car that drifts or pulls to one side even on a flat, straight road, a steering wheel that sits off-centre when you're driving straight ahead, and tyres that wear unevenly across their width rather than evenly. Any single one of these is worth getting checked; more than one together makes it more likely.
Why does my car pull to one side?
See Why Does My Car Pull to One Side? for the full list of causes. Alignment is one of the more common ones, but not the only one, which is exactly why it needs checking rather than assuming.
Why does the steering wheel shake or sit off-centre?
A steering wheel that's simply off-centre while the car drives straight is a classic alignment sign. Shaking that comes on specifically at speed is a different symptom with its own common causes — see Why Does My Steering Wheel Shake at Speed? — so it's worth being clear about which one you're actually seeing before assuming it's alignment.
What throws the alignment out in the first place?
Usually something physical: a pothole or kerb hit hard enough to knock a wheel out of position, a worn suspension component, or just the wear and movement of day-to-day driving over time. It isn't usually sudden without a cause — something has normally changed.
Does uneven tyre wear always mean alignment is the problem?
Not always — tyre pressure that's regularly too low or too high causes its own uneven wear pattern, and so can worn suspension parts. It's one of the things that genuinely needs a proper look rather than a guess, which is exactly why ONEFIX checks tyre condition, and photographs it, as part of every health check.
Does bad alignment show up in tyre wear straight away?
No, usually not. Alignment wear builds up gradually over weeks and thousands of miles, which is exactly why it tends to go unnoticed until it's fairly advanced, or until someone photographs the tyre and compares it to how it looked a service or two earlier. A one-off glance at a tyre rarely tells you much; a dated photographic record does.
Can I keep driving like this, or does it need sorting urgently?
It's rarely an emergency in the way a dangerous MOT defect is, but it isn't something to leave indefinitely either. Driving with the alignment out wears tyres faster than it should, which costs more in the long run than the alignment job itself, and in the meantime the car isn't handling quite the way it's meant to.
How much does wheel alignment cost?
There's no single fixed price, because it depends on how far out the alignment is and how many wheels need adjusting. ONEFIX checks it first and gives a written quote before any work starts, rather than quoting blind.
Will ONEFIX spot this even if I haven't mentioned it?
Often, yes. Every service at ONEFIX includes a written digital health check with photographs, which is where uneven tyre wear tends to get noticed and flagged — sometimes before a driver has consciously felt anything wrong while driving.
Ready to get it checked?
