Interim, Full or Major Service: Which Do You Need?

An interim and a full service are the two regular check-ups most cars cycle through, with the full service the more thorough of the pair. A major service builds on a full service by adding the bigger jobs a car only needs every few years. Which one is due depends on your car's own schedule, not a single national rule.

What's the difference between an interim and a full service?

An interim service is the lighter, more frequent of the two, while a full service goes further and is usually the once-a-year check. Many garages, ONEFIX included, use the interim service to cover the shorter-interval items between full services on cars that do higher mileage, while the full service covers everything an interim does and more. Our guide on what a full service actually includes sets out the full list rather than repeating it here.

What does a major service cover that a full service doesn't?

A major service adds the bigger-ticket jobs that a car only needs every few years rather than every year — the kind of work that sits on a longer cycle than an oil and filter change. A cambelt (or timing chain) replacement is the clearest example: it's not part of a routine full service, and whether your car even has one is worth checking first — our guide on cambelt or chain explains how to find out, and when a cambelt should be replaced covers the timing. Because a major service is built around whatever your specific car is due, ONEFIX doesn't quote a single fixed price for it the way it can for an interim or full service — it's priced once we know what your car actually needs.

How do I know which one my car is due?

The honest answer is: check your car's own schedule rather than guessing from the name. Most manufacturers set service intervals by time or by mileage, whichever comes first, and our guide on service by time or by mileage explains how that works. Your handbook or dashboard service reminder will usually say which type is next. If you're not sure, tell ONEFIX your car's mileage and the date of its last service and we'll confirm what's due before you book.

Will ONEFIX just do the scheduled service, or tell me what my car actually needs?

Every service at ONEFIX includes a written digital vehicle health check with photographs, so you can see what was looked at and why, not just a tick-box list. If that check turns up something extra — a worn tyre, a corroded brake pipe, anything outside the service itself — ONEFIX quotes the price in writing first and doesn't carry out any work that hasn't been approved. That applies whether it's an interim, full or major service.

How much do an interim and full service cost at ONEFIX?

An interim service is from £90 + VAT and a full service is from £120 + VAT. A major service is priced individually once we know which extra jobs your car is due, for the reason above — it varies too much car to car to quote a single figure.

Can I just book a full service and skip the interim?

You can, and plenty of lower-mileage cars are fine on an annual full service alone. It comes down to how your car is used — higher-mileage or older cars tend to benefit more from the extra interim check in between, which is exactly why the two exist side by side rather than one replacing the other. If you're not sure which pattern suits your car, ONEFIX can look at the mileage and history and suggest one when you book.

Is a major service the same thing as an MOT?

No — they're two different things, even though people often book them together. A major service is about maintenance: replacing parts on a schedule before they fail. An MOT is the legal roadworthiness test, and ONEFIX tests Class 4 vehicles (cars and small vans) for it. A car can pass its MOT and still be overdue a major service, and a well-serviced car can still fail an MOT on something a service wouldn't have caught, such as a lighting fault. Booking them close together is sensible, but one doesn't replace the other.

Ready to book?

If you know your car's mileage and when it was last serviced, you can book online and ONEFIX will confirm whether an interim or full service is the right one before you arrive.
